May 5, 1930 – June 21, 2019 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Donald Harper of Calgary, Alberta on Friday, June 21, 2019 at the age of 89 years. Don was born on May 5, 1930 to John and Marion Harper of Calgary. After graduating from Western Canada High School, he followed in his father’s footsteps and became a business owner. His first business was Harpers Hardware and then went on to sell fishing and hunting gear and small fishing boats. His success in retail business grew into Harper’s Marine and Harpers Ski West. Don had a passion for sports. He also enjoyed later in life ocean boating and sailing. He always made himself available to fix everyone’s motor boats at Sylvan Lake, where we had a cabin many years. Don was involved in many service clubs and was on the Stampede driving committee for many years. He also was a volunteer driver in the 1988 Winter Olympics. Don is survived by one son Robert (Marilyn); five daughters, Caron Smed (John); Janice Poettcker (Allan); Julie Lawson; Theresa Gilker (Ross); Nancy Harper (Brian); nineteen grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren; brother Stan Harper (Bev); two sisters, Joyce Bennett and Millie Bodtker; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Don was predeceased by his loving wife Mary-Ann; brother Jack Harper, sister-in-law Marie Harper; and son-in-law Brian Ponting.
