in tion we Iped THE MIAMI HERALD, SUNDAY, JANUARY 5, 1992 A Slain pastor remembered as a healer Over 1,000 praise 'servant of Lord' By MARJORIE VALBRUN Herald Staff Writer During the 13 years that he was pastor of the Hosanna Church of the Nazarene, the Rev. Akish Devallon worked hard to cultivate his faithful flock. He taught them the word of God and showed them how to live by it. He prayed with them when they were sick and counseled them when they lost their Devallon way. He gave them Haitian immigrants in a new land a sense of belonging.

And he tried to save troubled souls. On Saturday, just three days after Devallon was shot dead in the street, more than 1,000 members of his congregation, friends and fellow pastors from the Church of the Nazarene bid farewell to the man whose life was cut short by one troubled soul he could not heal a longtime member of his congregation. "What a tragedy that Pastor Akish was gunned down," Robert H. Spear, South Florida district superintendent for the Church of the Nazarene, told mourners Saturday. "What a tragedy.

Fiftyseven. Strong. Vital. Commanding. Hard-working.

Tough. In love with his people. He was not weak. He was not wishy-washy. What a Devallon was gunned down on New Year's Day, less than an hour after concluding a special New Year's Eve service at his church.

Moments after Devallon pulled up to his home at 8318 NE Third Ct. and stepped out of his car, the gunman shot him. As the wounded pastor ran for his life, pleading for help, the man shot him again and again. Pierre Hall, a 47-year-old carpenter who joined the church in the late 1970s, has been charged with first-degree murder. Devallon had recently criticized him for beating his wife.

Hall allegedly had threatened Devallon during a church service last month. A HELPING HAND: A friend wipes the Rev. Akish Devallon, during But on Saturday the talk was not of death, it was of life the life Devallon had led as a "servant of the Lord." At the Central Church of the Nazarene, 1300 NW 95th the hundreds who came to pay their respects were sad but not bitter. They asked not for revenge but for redemption. And they prayed that they would remain strong in the face of tragedy, as Devallon had taught them to be.

Most said their memories of Devallon would guarantee it. "He was a man with faith. He was a man who saved so many lives in our church," said Byron Filus, a church member for nine years and leader of the church's tears and perspiration from the face of Louisanna Devallon, wife of funeral services Saturday at Central Church of the Nazarene. band, the Group of the Good Shepherd. Filus told mourners this story: "I was sick for three weeks.

I was riding up and down to Jackson Memorial Hospital and I couldn't find any results. One night he came to my house with his wife and daughter. He put his hand on my stomach and prayed. I felt better after the third prayer. My wife was sick in the hospital at the time, awaiting an operation.

He prayed over the phone with her. To this day, she has not needed the operation." Devallon's widow, Louisanna, clasped hands with relatives and nodded knowingly as the words of praise flowed. Devallon was born Oct. 22, 1934, in La Gonave, Haiti, a tiny island 20 miles off the west central coast of Port-au-Prince. Pain was dramatically evident throughout Saturday's service.

Wails and moans echoed from the pews. Some loyal church members, overcome with grief, had to be carried out of the church. Marie Fernande, president of the church's missionary group, sang a soulful rendition of Bel Sous La Vi or The Beautiful Spring of Life. "He wanted me to sing this song for him for tomorrow's church service," she said softly, "but I will sing it for him School may get late superintendent Bell's name By CHARISSE L. Two rescued teens: 'Either him or us' By MANUEL M. RUIZ Herald Writer While the two teenagers tried to keep from drowning in the choppy waters off Haulover Beach Saturday, another friend flailed in the sea, crying uncontrollably. It was, the boys told rescuers, "either him us." So Richard Furmanek, 16, and Luis Kramer, 15, tied a life jacket around 14-year-old Robert Gallo and swam for the shore three miles away.

It was the best they could do for their panicking friend and still save themselves. After three hours in the unseasonably chilly Atlantic, the 65-foot charter fishing vessel The Hurricane rescued Richard and Luis. Three hours later, a Coast Guard helicopter plucked Robert out of the ocean and took him to Holly- DEATHS MARTY JAMES AIDS activist helped victims commit suicide Los Angeles Times Service HOLLYWOOD Marty James, the controversial gay rights activist who disclosed on national television that he had assisted AIDS victims in committing suicide, has taken his own life after a long battle with the deadly disease.
