The Plain Dealer from Cleveland, Ohio (2024)

4 E8 Arts Life The Plain Dealer Tuesday, January 20, 2004 THEATER From this kind of staged comedy, we're yearning to be free TONY BROWN Plain Dealer Theater Critic Think of Dobama Theatre's "Raised in Captivity" as the perfect storm of bad contemporary comedy. It's written by an author who thinks dysfunctional people can't help but amuse and is staged by a director who doesn't know what he's doing, using actors who aren't funny. For hours. Written by Nicky Silver, author of the eating-obsessed "Food Chain," "Raised in Captivity" invites us to consider the lives of Sebastian and Bernadette, very unhappy twins in their 40s. He's a self-isolating gay man who hasn't had sex in 11 years, has maxed out his credit cards to the tune of $45,000, finds comfort in letters from a prisoner, reads true-crime books and sees an unbalanced shrink.

She's a hyper-histrionic ditz married to a dentist who's afraid of teeth and wants to paint pictures for a living. She spends her spare time obsessing about whether her brother is better off than she is. They are drawn together when their mother is killed by an exploding shower massager. Upon hearing the news a minute or two into the play, Sebastian coolly observes that he always remembered his mother as a woman who enjoyed baths. Enjoy the moment.

That's the first and last funny line. One must suppose that Silver intends "Raised in Captivity" to be a wry study of seriously screwed-up people, but it quickly devolves into a messy, repetitive REVIEW Raised in Captivity What: Dobama Theatre presents the comedy by Nicky Silver, directed by Russ Borski. When: Through Sunday, Feb. 8. Where: 1846 Coventry Road, Cleveland Heights.

Tickets: Call 216-932- 3396, or go to www.dobama.org. and sad commentary on the state of the modern comedy. Russ Borksi, a Cleveland-area set designer who is not without talent (his latest work can be seen at the Hanna Theatre's "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now directs the five-member cast much as former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill described President Bush directing cabinet meetings: a blind man in a room full of deaf people. Ignoring the script's few sophisticated possibilities, Borski seizes upon the broadest and most obvious jokes and hammers away at them. After 15 minutes, the viewer feels like Joe Frazier's face after the Thrilla in Manila.

But there is another hour and 15 minutes to go before intermission. After the break, the body's natural defenses kick in, and the second act is mostly a blur. In what is supposed to be an audience-pleasing gimmick, real-life brother and sister actors Tyson and Tyler Postma play Sebastian and Bernadette. It is at least somewhat diverting to keep mental score of which is more irritating, Tyson's bland understatement or Tyler's manic overacting. Read Real Estate Every Saturday in The Plain Dealer. His mother, "happy homemaker" Lesley Shackleton (Shannon), is a bipolar alcoholic subject to severe mood swings.

Her husband, charismatic Ted (Christopher McDonald), is a sociopath. Their cheerleader daughter, Chloe (Caitlin Wachs), is delusional. And their all-American son, Preston (Jake Sandvig), is obsessive-compulsive. Shannon, 39, has been cracking up network viewers for almost a decade. She earned an Emmy nomination during her six-year "Saturday Night Live" tenure, playing her most-memorable character, accident -prone Catholic-school girl Mary Katherine Gallagher, as well as such celebrities as Courtney Love, Liza Minnelli, Monica Lewinsky and Meredith Vieira.

Why did she decide to take this stellar TV track record into "Cracking "I sort of put off doing TV when I first left the show because I was really into movies," Shannon says. "But then after two years of sort of fumbling around, I really felt like, Why would you not do TV? There's great stuff, if you could just find the right But I wasn't going to jump into something. There was no pressure. I just started reading scripts and said, 'Look, if I don't find the right thing, I'll just wait another I was happy because I was going to have a baby. But then this came along." The baby, Stella Shannon Chestnut, was born Sept.

23. "It's great," Shannon said of motherhood. "She's so cute. She comes to work with me in my trailer. It's hard, because I work long hours.

But it works out because she's still so little and I can bring her with me. I'm sure it will be harder if the show goes. But for now, it's not bad at all. "I'm so much busier. Time is like a different thing.

I used to have all this time to prepare. But she's there all the time now, so my schedule is a lot tighter. Every hour you have free, you want to be with her, so it really makes you use your time in a more productive way." It was the chance to work with White that persuaded her to take a crack at the Fox series. "So many actors love him," Shannon says. "And he loves actors and gets inspired by them and wants to write for them.

We don't know how long the show will go. TV is a crap shoot. "I don't think it's easy to find decent scripts. Just getting on air is hard enough. You get the gig, you shoot the pilot, they pick it up and they don't give shows as much growing time because there's so much more competition now.

So I don't take anything for granted at all. No matter what happens, I'm having a good time, and there's no show that I would rather be on this season than this show." Continuing to divide her time between New York and Los Angeles, Shannon plans to marry Stella's father, artist Fritz Chestnut, in May. That's about the time Fox will announce its fall season and the "Cracking Up" cast will learn if the show will be back for another season. Can Shannon relate to a character as wild and crazy as Lesley? "Let me see," she says. "I relate to Lesley's anxiousness.

Sometimes I get anxious in real life. And maybe the addictive side, like sometimes she just really wants something or she can only think about that one thing. Sometimes there will be a certain kind of makeup, like an eyeliner, that I need to get, like MAC Plum No. 3. And I'll get obsessed, like, 'I've got to get to Barney's to get that And I'll put that before everything and it's nuts.

That's sort of crazy." To reach this Plain Dealer reporter: 216-999-4249 A 4.
