Rene` D. Howard, age 76 of Harbor Beach, passed away Monday, January 22, 2024 at Courtney Manor Nursing Center, under hospice care. She was born on March 20, 1947 in Harbor Beach, to the late Leroy and Audrey (Tyler) Ramsey. Rene` and Jay Howard were united in marriage on August 13, 1983 in Garden City. Rene` was a beautician for many years. She is a member of the United Methodist Church in Harbor Beach. She enjoyed doing puzzles, going camping, and being with family.

Paul James Ottinger Sr, 75 passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 21, 2024, with his family by his side at Autumnwood of Deckerville.Paul was born on February 20, 1948, in Trenton, New Jersey, the son of the late George and Clara (Shepherd) Ottinger. Paul married Josephine ( Klosowski) on October 27, 1972.He is survived by his children Paul Ottinger Jr, Kathi (Geoffery) Mead, and Kelli (Brad Miller), as well as his three beloved grandsons, Jacob, Henrik, and Weston.Paul served his country through the U.S. Army. He spent just under one year in Vietnam with his fellow Bushmasters. He enjoyed hunting, woodworking, shooting his guns, and a good poker game.

Doris I. Brown, 92, of Pigeon passed away peacefully at Scheurer Health Saturday, January 20, 2024.Doris was born September 24, 1931 at home in Bay Port to the late Arthur and Lydia (Quick) Collison. She attended Snell Elementary School near Bay Port and graduated from Bay Port High School. She married Donald E. Brown on February 18, 1956 at the Bay Port Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ (Community of Christ) where she was a life-long member; he preceded her in death on June 6, 1972. Her husband Don’s untimely death in June of 1972 left her with 4 young children to raise.Doris worked for Wallace-Morley Company after high school and later started Don Brown Electric Co of Pigeon and Caro with her husband in 1956. She was a founding Board Member of Huron County Big Brother’s/Big Sisters, and later in life worked for Michigan Directory Company until her retirement at age 70. Doris enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, sports (Tigers), crafts, traveling, and teaching Sunday School.

Biography

Nancy Ann Kraft, 92, of Pigeon, was called home peacefully on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at home.Nancy was born June 12, 1931 in Grayling to the late George and Marian (Breinager) Carpenter. She was made a child of God through Holy Baptism on April 21, 1935. Nancy married Lowell E. Kraft on May 3, 1952 in Bronson, Michigan. They celebrated 70 years of marriage shortly before Lowell’s passing in 2022. Nancy’s sister, Mary Kay Prudden passed away in 2023. Nancy graduated from Pigeon High School in 1949. She attended Michigan State University and later Central Michigan University finishing the last two years of her teaching degree while her children were young. She taught second and third grades at the Pigeon Elementary School in the 1960’s. Nancy always enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She taught them kindness, compassion, and love. Nancy was a gifted homemaker and enjoyed entertaining family and friends. Always an optimist, she was a talented seamstress with a fun sense of humor who enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and playing Bridge. She enjoyed traveling with Lowell and spending winters at their home in Boynton Beach, Florida. While in Florida they attended Divine Savior Lutheran Church in West Palm Beach. She has been a member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church-Berne since 1952.

Michael Warren Pease, age 72, of Warren, Michigan passed away on Saturday, January 20th, 2024.Born in Bad Axe, Michigan to the late William “Warren” and Elizabeth “Betty” Pease. Michael was a devoted Lutheran man his entire life and loved the Lord. Michael stayed close with his parents his entire life and was beloved by his aunts Lena and Lydia, who greatly enjoyed spoiling Michael as he grew up. When he was older, Michael had a number of hobbies but most of all loved spending time with his friends who were his family. He knew all of the best spots to go out to eat together. An impeccable dresser, Michael was always dressed nicely no matter the day. An avid reader, Michael accumulated a large collection of books throughout his life. Michael’s favorite holiday was Christmas. Michael’s Christmas tree was nicknamed the “Bronner’s Christmas Tree” because he would fit as many of the ornaments from Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland as he could on it and even though it was a great deal of ornaments everyone always thought his Christmas tree was absolutely beautiful. Michael will be greatly missed by all who survive him.

He led by example, to reach for more in life and to give back in a way that was exemplary.

Biography

Lambert E. Althaver, “Bert”, 92, of Cass City passed peacefully with his family around him at his home on January 19, 2024. He was born May 18, 1931 in Kansas City, Missouri to Edward and Dorothy Althaver. He attended Principia College located in Elsah, Illinois, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree and met his wife, Holly Walpole. September 1952, he joined the US Army in Augusta, GA. He and Holly married in February 1953 and spent the next 69 years together before her passing in July 2022. Following his two years of service in the military, he joined the family business called Walbro Corporation as an accountant in 1954. He rose through the business. In 1958, he was named Assistant to the President, then promoted to Vice President-Finance in 1965, he was appointed Executive Vice President in 1970. Bert became President and Chief Operating Officer in 1977, eventually becoming the Chief Executive Officer and named Chairman in 1987. Bert finished his distinguished career retiring from Walbro in 1998. Walbro came to Cass City in 1954 as a small start-up company looking for a location to manufacture small engine carburetors primarily used in lawn mowers. During Bert’s tenure, Walbro became a public company listed on the New York stock exchange. Through his leadership the company expanded into a manufacturer of fuel system products for the global automotive industry serving the Big Three and the growing Japanese, Korean and Chinese auto industry. This period of growth included carburetors for the growing snow mobile and many other outdoor power equipment industries. The Company established a global business throughout the world outside the United States in the countries of: Mexico, Brazil, France, Germany, Norway, Spain, Belgium, the U.K., Japan, South Korea and China. Bert wanted to help build the local community and took a personal interest in its development. He served as President of the Village of Cass City from 1965 to 1984 again from 1987 to 2000 and for a final time from 2004 to 2007 for a total of 35 years. He was the founding Chairman of the Tuscola (County) Area Airport Authority retiring from this role in 2004. Bert was the Director of the Tuscola County Economic Development Corporation for 20 years and a Commissioner for the County Planning Commission for 5 years. In 1998, Bert was appointed to the Board of Hills and Dales General Hospital in Cass City where he served for 20 years. Bert wanted to develop the community cultural space too. He served as a Director of the Cass City Arts Council and was the Director and Business Manager of the Village Bach Festival which was started by his wife Holly. This festival brought classical musicians from North America to Cass City every Thanksgiving weekend for 20 years. His interest in the arts didn’t stop with music. He was Director of Artrain USA. This organization used the railroad to expose art to people around Michigan for more than 30 years and was developed into a national organization. He served as Chairman of the Board of that organization from 1996 to 2003. As an Eagle Scout, Bert was active in the Boy Scouts of America, receiving the Distinguished Eagle Scout and Silver Beaver Awards, and served as a member of the Executive Board of the Lake Huron Area Council from 1988 to 2000. Bert was named Citizen of the Year in 1978 by the Cass City Chamber of Commerce and a Paul Harris Society member of Rotary International, serving twice as President of the Cass City Rotary Club. In 1997, he was named an Outstanding Business Leader by Northwood University (Midland, Michigan). Bert served on the Board of Trustees at Northwood University starting 2000. His service led to the honorary degree of, Doctor of Laws, by Northwood in 2003.

Clayton Edward Day, age 85 of Bad Axe, passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2024.He was born on May 20, 1938 in Bad Axe, MI to the late Sherman and Eva (Foster) Day.Clayton grew up in Bad Axe and was a graduate of Bad Axe High School. Following high school, he joined the army. After returning home, he married Nancy Rolle on August 24, 1963 at the First United Methodist Church in Bad Axe. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. He was a member of the St. Paul Methodist Church of Elkton, the Indian Trails Riding Club, the Michigan Sheriff’s Posse Association, the Good Sam’s Camping Club, the America Legion and the VFW. He enjoyed hiking in Arizona and collecting antique tractors. He worked at Active Industries/Tower for 36 years. He retired with 21 years in the military.

Betty Jane Cornett, 96, lifelong resident of Huron County passed away at her home with her daughters at her side. Betty was born on May 16, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan to thelate Walter and Minnie Trepkowski. She attended Cedardale Elementary School in Palms through 8th grade and later graduated from Bad Axe High School. On June 6, 1953, she married the love of her life, Ernest Cornett at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rapson. Ernie passed away on May 17, 1993.Betty worked for Kritzman’s Clothing Store for many years until her retirement in 1987. She loved being with her family, playing cards and going to senior dances with her many friends. She was also a long time member of St Hubert Parish (Sacred Heart) in Bad Axe.

Mary Marguerite Nichol, 88 years old of Filion, passed away peacefully at her home with her husband Bob by her side, on January 16, 2024. Mary was born on January 14, 1936 to the late Edward and Helen (LePla) Haller, at her childhood home in Bad Axe, Michigan. On June 30, 1956, she and her high school sweetheart, Robert Nichol were married, and their love story spanned a lifetime of over 67 years. Mary and Bob were rarely apart, as even during his years of driving truck, she was by his side. She was a life member of Huronia Chapter 81, Order of the Eastern Star, and she served as Worthy Matron, and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Kinde. She loved to read and often carried an “extra” book in case she finished one. She always enjoyed hearing about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and watching them grow and bringing joy to those that loved them.

Shirley Ann Lieke Purdy, age 91, of Harbor Beach, went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 16, 2024. She was born on October 20, 1932 to the late Edward and Selma (Weiss) Liedke. She married Richard Purdy on October 11, 1952. Shirley's children were her life and was quick to tell everyone that she had five daughters. She also had a niche for house work and never left her house unkept. She had a great love for music, and taught herself to play the piano and accordion by ear.

Moore on April 24, 1943 at the Owendale Methodist Parsonage; he preceded her in death August 14, 2007.Genevieve really meant a lot to so many people. She was so much fun to talk with and be around, and it was noticeable to people only meeting her for the first time. Right up until the end she would talk about the last time you were with her, what happened last week, and so many stories from such a rich life.Genevieve was blessed with such good people in her life. So many friends and family have cared for this spunky and sweet lady. Dennis and Gail were in constant contact with her, getting her anything that could make her life better in any way, big or small. Bonnie cared for her husband’s mother as if she were her own. So many people called her, visited her, sent her cards, and celebrated special moments. All that helped her really love life in a time and place where so many others are alone. To all of you that cared for Toots, thank you. Thank you for loving this woman.

On April 20, 1968 she married Lloyd Fritz Sr. at the Owendale United Methodist Church; he preceded her in death November 20, 2023.Betty loved being home with family, baking and raising her grandchildren. She was a devoted member of Potter’s House Church in Cass City. She enjoyed camping with friends and family, reading and crocheting blankets.

She loved reading, putting puzzles together, gardening with her family, walking and shopping and having coffee with friends and especially with her sisters. Larry J. Osantowski, 67, of Gagetown, died unexpectedly January 10, 2024 at home. He was born February 3, 1956 to Marcus and Joan (Doerr) Osantowski. Larry married Christine Ann Strozeski June 9, 1979 in Argyle. Larry graduated from Ubly High School in 1974 and was employed by General Cable for twenty-five years. He worked at Vita Plus until his retirement. Larry loved spending time with his grandchildren. He proudly attended his grandsons’ baseball games and his granddaughter’s dance recitals. Larry always bought a box of Valentine candy for his wife, kids and grandchildren. He loved watching Western and Karate movies. Larry was an outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, especially coyotes, and fishing. Larry smoked his own venison sausage. He was always there when someone needed him and would drop everything to help family and friends. Larry always wanted everything to be perfect and was fond of saying, “put stuff back where you found it”. He will be greatly missed.

She resided in Parisville for 60 years and was a life-long member of St. Mary's - St. Isidore Catholic Church, Parisville.Kathleen attended Fillmore School through eighth grade and graduated high school through Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic School-Harbor Beach. Pat was born to Franklin and Mina (Gotham) Burgett on October 26, 1934 in Deckerville, MI. She is survived by her husband Ron Kuhl (Sebewaing); three daughters- Debra Jackson (Bay City), Diane Jackson (Saginaw), and Sharon Jackson (Sebewaing); five grandchildren- Carissa Smith (Bay City), Shamar Colon (Milwaukee, WI), Erin Welton (Bay City), Melissa Geiseman (Raleigh, NC), and Tyler Jackson (Grand Rapids); seven great grandchildren- Eric, Elijah, Jaden, Sophie, Olive, Opal and Mazie; and two brothers; William Burgett (Bay City) and James Burgett (Sebewaing). Pat was more than just the matriarch of her family; she was the glue that held them together through the ups and downs of life. She was tough as nails and played the hand she was dealt with incredible resilience. Many holidays you would find her in the kitchen, cooking delicious meals and hosting her daughters and their families. Pat was extremely charismatic, funny, fierce, competitive, and sassy. She loved to play dice, garden, cook, and try her luck at the slot machines. Her grandkids and great grandkids were the light of her life.
