1 THE BOSTON GLOBE THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1992 Damage to Miss. $500 BLOOMBERG BUSINESS NEWS BATON ROUGE Hurricane Andrew did $500 million worth of damage to houses, businesses, cars and boats in Louisiana and Mississippi, an insurance group said yesterday in its first formal estimate of storm losses in the two states. The amount was far less than the $7.3 billion in losses estimated for south Florida Tuesday by the same organization, the American Insurance Services Group. destruction was primarily the result of high winds and doesn't include flood damage, said William Davis, a spokesman for the group. figure also doesn't include damage to uninsured property and public facilities such as roads and bridges.

The towns most severely affected, all in Louisiana, were Lafayette, New Iberia and parts of Baton Rouge, he said. The estimate by the association of property insurers will be used as a Louisiana, million guideline by insurance companies in determining how much to pay for claims. Lloyd's: Too early to set Hurricane Andrew's costs REUTERS LONDON Insurance underwriters at Lloyd's of London said yesterday it was too early to estimate how much they would have to pay out for the damage wreaked by Hurricane Andrew in Florida and Louisiana last week. But Lloyd's, the world's largest insurance market, said it would have less exposure to the storm than it has had to previous ones. "Unlike Hurricane Hugo when Lloyd's paid a large part of the final loss, it is predicted by leading Lloyd's underwriters that Lloyd's share of Hurricane Andrew will be considerably less," said in a statement.

GM, UAW report progress in parts-plant negotiations GM Continued from Page 35 local strike had been reduced to 30 or 40 from 350. Bargainers were believed to still be discussing GM's plan to close a tool-and-die shop employing 240 workers and the company's decision to run the parts plant with 125 fewer workers. Local 1714 represents about 2,400 workers. Talks to head off a UAW strike at the adjacent Lordstown assembly plant also continued yesterday. Local 1112 has threatened to strike tomorrow afternoon.

The plant's 7,000 workers already are furloughed because of the parts plant strike. In addition to the seven GM plants closed and the 32,500 workers furloughed, reports of layoffs from plants that supply the closed assembly plants were growing. For instance, the Kingston-Warren Corp. plant in Church Hill, indefinitely laid off more than 700 workers because of its dependance on GM business.

On Tuesday, GM's Powertrain Division sent home 2,000 workers from its transmission plant in Warren, Mich. A GM stamping plant near Kalamazoo sent home 100 of its 2,500 workers and 950 workers in Lansing, Mich. were sent home. One of the five GM assembly plants still threatened, a van-making plant in Scarborough, Ontario, was expected to close after today's first shift, GM Truck and Bus spokesman Herb Kindt said. Kane, the chain's cochairman and co-chief executive, put the cost of the wiring and ceiling work at only $3,300. Prior to receiving the eviction notice, "we certainly had signals they were going to close the place," he added. "It would be unfair of me to say we've been mistreated." Also cited in Barrett's letter as being poorly treated by the owner was a tenant who was evicted on grounds of nonpayment of rent after its on-time August payment was refused. The BRA identified that tenant as a shoe repair shop, Heel Quick. Its proprietor, William Riley, could not be reached.

Barrett's third example was a tie company, It's a Tie, that operated out of a pushcart in Downtown Crossing until it traded up recently into leased space in Lafayette Place. With an advance order of ties for the Christmas season and no place to sell them, the company had to file for Chapter 11 protection under the state's bankruptcy code, according to the letter. Kenneth Herz, a Chemical Bank spokesman in New York, did not return a phone call for comment on Barrett's complaints.
